A Healthier You: Exercising Your Creativity [Video]

When it comes to physical exercise, we know that we probably need to have some sort of plan for making it work. We can’t just run 15 miles on the first day and then expect to take a break for the next 3 months.

But with our creativity, we often do just that. “I’m going to try to write an entire novel in a week and then not worry about writing for a few months.”

We talked earlier in the week about not overplanning, but some planning can be pretty helpful.

Trying to sporadically make time for your art can leave you disconnected and frustrated. And when you get frustrated (if you’re anything like me), you want to just stop all progress on your art.

I believe that practicing creativity is as important as keeping up with physical exercise. Instead of physical health, we’re concerned with balancing out mental and emotional health.

You don’t have to be a diehard at physical exercise to stay in good shape. The same goes for creativity. Just because you’re not a world-renowned painter doesn’t mean that you can’t find peace and enjoyment from painting.

Making a Plan

In the video, I mentioned the value of making a plan for the next two weeks. You can write it out on a sheet of paper, post it in the comment section below, or do whatever works best for you in order to make time.

I’ll post my schedule below so you can see that I’m not just saying this is something you should do. In fact, I struggle more with this week’s earlier post: not overplanning.

But here’s my schedule…

Next Week (Starting Sunday)
Weekends are always a “maybe” for me, so I usually don’t plan anything that has to be done.

  • Monday morning – Work on a writing project that will soon be available to the Revive Your Creativity community
  • Tuesday morning – Write a blog post
  • Wednesday morning – More work on the same writing project
  • Thursday morning – Write a blog post
  • Friday morning – Write the weekly newsletter that goes out on Sunday

The Following Week

  • Monday morning – More work on the same writing project
  • Tuesday morning – Write a blog post
  • Wednesday morning – More work on the same writing project
  • Thursday morning – Record another video for the blog
  • Friday morning – Write the weekly newsletter that goes out on Sunday

These are the projects that I know I want to complete. I may feel inspired to do something more, but I know that this is at least my baseline. Sure, I may miss a day, but I can always hop back on track when that happens.
